In this article, we address the common question: how to care for your dental implants after surgery.
How to Care for Your Dental Implants After Surgery
Correct and careful post-surgery care is crucial for your implants to heal swiftly and without complications. Here are the key points of effective dental implant care after surgery.
Keep Your Mouth Clean
Effective oral hygiene is crucial to avoiding infections after your dental implant surgery. Follow your doctor’s advice on how to maintain oral hygiene in your particular care. The general recommendations typically include brushing your teeth thoroughly with a soft brush twice a day and flossing every evening, being careful when cleaning around the surgery site. Additionally, your doctor might recommend saltwater rinses after meals to prevent food residue and bacteria from lingering in your mouth.
Adjust Your Diet
Changing your diet for several weeks is a crucial part of the recovery process after dental implant surgery, as you need to avoid straining and moving your jaw as much as possible to allow it to heal. You should also avoid chewing on the side of your mouth where the surgery was performed.
Additionally, your diet should contain vitamins, minerals, and protein necessary for healing and recovery.
Liquid Diet
Start with a liquid diet for the first 48 hours after the surgery. The examples of liquid foods include:
- Broth
- Smoothies
- Strained pureed and cream soups
- Yogurt and kefir
- Milk and milkshakes
Soft Diet
After the first 48 hours, adhere to a soft diet for the next several days. Continue chewing your food on the non-surgery side of your mouth and cut your food into small pieces to minimize work for your jaw. Examples of soft diet include:
- Pureed vegetables, such as mashed potatoes
- Soups with soft-boiled vegetables
- Soft-boiled eggs and omelets
- Porridge
- Cottage cheese
- Pate
- Tofu
- Soft-cooked beans
Foods to Avoid
Abstain from hard and crunchy foods as they will put unnecessary strain on your jaw and can irritate the gums around the implant. Also, acidic, hot, or cold foods and drinks are not recommended.
Return to Your Normal Diet Slowly
After 7 to 10 days of a soft diet, you can gradually introduce other foods into your menu, such as soft cutlets, pasta, and rice. However, you should still be careful for at least 3 to 6 months after surgery, opting for softer foods and avoiding hard and crunchy foods, as well as those that require a lot of chewing or biting.
Manage Swelling and Pain
You are likely to experience pain, swelling, and bruising for several days after the surgery. To manage these symptoms, follow these tips:
Take over-the-counter painkillers, such as Ibuprofen, when necessary, but never exceed the recommended daily dose and overall duration of medication intake.
Keep your head elevated at all times, including when you sleep. You can do so by using additional pillows or sleeping in a half-seated position. Also, try not to sleep on the side of the surgery.
Apply cold compresses to the outer side of your face for 15 minutes at a time with 30-minute breaks between applications.
Get Plenty of Rest and Sleep
Rest and sleep are crucial for regeneration and recovery. Make sure you sleep at least 8 to 9 hours every day and take it easy during the day. Also, avoid any kinds of straining activities, especially sports and lifting heavy objects.
Abstain from Smoking and Alcohol
Smoking and alcohol significantly slow down regeneration, so we recommend cutting them out entirely for the duration of your dental implant recovery.
